Quick engineering salary comparison based on the #DEVBG stats from 2023 and 2024 in the Bulgarian IT industry. Dev.bg publish yearly a summary of the Bulgarian IT engineering salaries based on the job openings offers on their platform. https://lnkd.in/dNU5MD8D (2023 stats) https://lnkd.in/dX_dxvP7 (2024 stats) Based on the population data (let's assume it's a proper representation of the real world) we can determine the following: 1. PHP should be dead but it isn't (unfortunately) as it's one of the two categories with growing salaries in all job positions and ranges. 2. The second is the full stack development with a minimum drop of 65 levas in the first MID range(2-5 years) 3. All ranges except the Senior level(5+ years of experience) have a drop in salary compared to 2023 but for some seem negligible compared to the notion in the industry that "it's going down and AI will take over the world" :) 4. We can see that seniority still counts and there is now a shift towards growth of salaries of more senior people compared to others as the market tries to regulate. 5. There is still a lot of green for a "dying" and "shrinking" industry. Gave a talk at work on "Dependencies" today, trying to externalise and make explicit some of the background awareness that shapes my everyday practice as a software developer. It takes time for this awareness to develop. I remember the first time someone talked to me about how Gradle uses a topological sort over a graph of dependencies to determine a build order for tasks, and what a revelation that was. I remember the first time I was shown how to get IntelliJ to scan a Java project for cyclic dependencies between packages, and coming to understand why one might want to avoid them and how to unpick them if they arose. Now DAGs (directed acyclic graphs) are a comfortable piece of my mental furniture, but I don't know that more junior developers are often directly introduced to them - they might come up as a data structure with associated algorithms in CS courses, but is it explained that they're fundamental to the way compilers and build tooling assemble working software from many related pieces? Many developers are aware at some level that transitive dependencies can balloon out into bloat (and an ever-expanding attack surface for vulnerabilities), but how many can articulate this clearly? A large part of my practice as a Principal Engineer is mentoring individuals and looking out for knowledge gaps in teams. It can be hard to recover a "beginner's mind" and remember what it was like not to know (or to be only vaguely aware of) something that became second nature to you over a decade ago, but it forces you to make your implicit knowledge explicit - which also gives you opportunities to reflect on it. Teaching is learning: you go back and retread old paths, and are confronted again with long-forgotten questions. Like everyone at the moment, I wonder what the impact of LLMs is going to be on the way developers acquire the background awareness and instincts that guide accomplished practitioners. Will they help to make implicit knowledge explicit, or will they paper over gaps in knowledge and obstruct the process of learning?

In the context of React app development, the code coverage metric makes sense only for business logic. All the rest what matters is whether User Journeys are completing or not. We might have 100% test coverage, but tasks our customers go through in the app are still broken 😮 Here at Erste Digital, we use integration tests for our digital banking web app. These tests don’t care about lines coverage, but whether the app actually works. Attached is an example of an integration test written by one of my mentees on a training kata/project.

Finally, the second quarter has ended, and we are pleased to share its results with you, as well as our plans for the future. Now the MC Pay app has become even more user-friendly than ever before. What have changed: 1. Available payment methods info Now, users who have passed the KYC and have a balance of </= $0 will see payment methods and will be able to view information about them while clicking on the “Withdraw” button. 2. New referral program Each user will have a unique link generated, via which they can invite other creators to the network. After successfully connecting a channel with an income of $3,000 or more, the user who invited this channel will get a $500 bonus. 3. Impressive redesign of our app We’ve adapted the MC Pay app for large screens and changed "Balance" block. Switching accounts was moved into a block with a general MC Pay balance, because experience shows that people mainly use only one account 4. Expresses We simplified the naming, reduced everything to Expresses. Now it’s both the name of the feature and the old Credits. Despite MC Pay's grand updates, we are always in the process of transformation. We're setting ourselves a lot of really cool product challenges in the new quarter. Among them are: - Auto-confirmation of transactions of the "Expresses" section - Auto-withdrawal of funds as part of “Early Payouts” subscriptions - Creation of new toggles between templates on the output screen As for long-term plans, we hope to have a release of our payment system soon. Despite the challenges, we are already preparing for this incredible change!

There’s a reason why only two of the top hundred software companies are in the European Union. Ambition is much more natural in the States than in the EU. Where I grew up in Hungary, ambition is not something you're proud of. You're being taught that you should stay a simple man. You should work 9 to 5. And that's generally accepted. This is the ideal life. Stay the simple man. Success & money is associated with shady dealings. After visiting the US, it’s hard to remain in the mindset of staying small when you see so many people rushing to fulfill their potential and achieve success. As social creatures, we tend to converge towards the behaviors of people who we spend the most time with. You know … “you are the average of the five people you hang out with the most” … So if you surround yourself with people who are ambitious and always thinking about solving a big problem, you will find yourself solving big problems as well. It’s inevitable.

We, at RetiUno, while architecting The Uno Platform, had recognized the strengths (and weaknesses) of two leading JS frameworks - Angular and React. So, we decided to combine the best of both. Here is what we did. Angular works with Classes and Templates while React recommends functions and JSX. We believe that using Classes make your code more organized and the benefit of Object-Oriented Programming is a bonus. Use of TypeScript makes it even more robust. At the same time, JSX gives more flexibility in building highly dynamic templates that are lazily built and loaded. So, we combined both - Used React as the core framework with the Class components written in TypeScript Another good thing of Angular is the use of TypeScript Decorators. We used it on top of the React Components to declaratively organize components into modules and modules into other modules. We have also followed the template approach of Angular for User Interface design. However, as all the template definitions are stored in a database (not in a source file that needs pre-compilation) which are downloaded, built and cached only when needed the first time. This makes the initial download size of the application/platform very small (and fixed, irrespective of how big or small your actual application is). This is called lazy loading in true sense. The next important thing is - state management. While most of the React based applications use heavy libraries, like redux and saga, we are using a very simple, home-grown Event Management Library. This works on the pub-sub mechanism of Event propagation. The good thing is that it works the same way in both front-end app as well as (Node.JS based) backend app. The Uno Platform has taken all of this one level up as developers expect higher level of simplification in a Low-Code App Platform. The end users, if they need to write custom code, they don't need to worry about either of these (Angular or React) technologies. They just need to write their code in simple JavaScript with some abstracted APIs provided by the platform. So, in future, we can simply replace the underlying core technology with anything better, without affecting the behaviour of the hosted applications.
